dykes with a cutting edge
"DYKELOVE"seemed to be the best choice for performing at the June 15, 2002 anti-DOMA demonstration at the Mass State House. Cute, catchy, and lovable without being too agressive for un-convinced viewers. We felt confident because DYKELOVE had met with positive response all over Newbury street and the Boston Common, as well as in P-Town at Women's Week 2001. First we tried out performing it right at the road but noone could really hear us over mid-day traffic. Then we moved to the foot of the side entrance steps. No security officers appeared, so we grew bolder and bolder.

DAGGER's joined by some Lesbian Avengers.
Finally we went up and stood right at the top of the steps near the security check - a captive audience lined up again and again! We sang our silly song, flyered, and did our cute little dance in Tux jackets and crazy beaded or floral dresses. At the last minute long-lost DAGGER Dani ran panting up the steps and jumped into our song - She remembered every bit of it!
We trooped inside through the security check and stood for over two hours of testimony and witnessing of queer love stories (one male couple had been together over 40 years, one lesbian couple had been together 27 years with shared children, etc.) We heard from all sorts of alternative families, considering the need for health care and inheritance rights to be available to all.
Security guards asked to see our piece again as we were leaving - they liked it! We really felt that we had added to this Demonstration and supported our peers and allies at a history-making event"
DYKELOVE SCRIPT:
ALL start by lining up and standing W a dyke Bride and Bride in the center. The first line is delivered sing-song in unison, like a barbershop quartet:
ALL: "People always ask us/ everywhere we go/
What do these Queers WANT?"/ Does-any-body-know?"
MAL: "We want the right to marry/ to mate/
to be together/ and be told That's GREAT!"
ALL: "Yes! just like You - and we want OUR family photos
in our Cubical, too!" (pose for photo)
AMATUL: "But, when we DO find "Our One True Love", then they ask us..."
(dancing and swaying in time with the song) : "Who is the man?/ Who is the wife? Will you be together/ for the rest of your life?
Don't ALL marriages last/ happy-forever-after? (end note up)
Happy - Forever - After!" (end note down)
(MAL or DANI states loudly:) "But what do these pesky Queers WANT anyway? What are those "special privileges" that we all want so badly?"
ALL: "LOVE! LIFE! LIBERTY! And the pursuit of HAPPYNESS!"
Woman no. 1: "A Human Family is what we're after" -
Woman no. 2: "to live out our life-time and love-time" -
Woman no. 3: "with companionship and laughter" -
AMATUL: "THATS what Queer Folk are after!"
MAL: "I now pronounce you....Happy - Forever - After!"
ALL: "We’re Dagger, the Queer Girl's and Women's Guerilla Theater Troupe of the Theater Offensive, Liberating a Loving Space near YOU!"
