Robbie McCauley, two of America’s most compelling contemporary theater artists, magically orchestrate the clash between the high world of opera and the jagged cadences of city life. Jones wrote Bel Canto during a year-long NEA/TCG Playwriting Residency at The Theater Offensive through the "Plays At Work" program.
After receiving the Rockefeller Foundation’s prestigious MAP grant and readings at the Public Theatre in New York and Penumbra Theatre in St. Paul, Bel Canto was chosen to be developed at the 2002 Sundance Institute Theatre Lab in Utah. Now this gutsy and passionate play comes back home for its world premiere in a ground-breaking collaboration that is a true New England first.
It is December 1978 and Benjamin Turner is sixteen. Springfield, Massachusetts is not the most welcoming new home for this Berkeley-raised boy wearing his heart on his sleeve, but then, where in this world would be? The radiant diva Marian Anderson appears amidst a constellation of stars to serenade him as he dances under the streetlights, anointed by snowflakes.
"Oh so delicate- each drop a sudden dream sketched in unique symmetry."
He knows his life will never be the same.
Bessie, his struggling mother, Terence, a shy schoolmate with a secret, and Barbara Scarlatti, a larger-than-life former opera singer, deliver Benjamin onto the threshold of adulthood. As Marian Anderson watches, Benjamin must deal with the impact of wishes coming true in all their terror and beauty. Bel Canto magically orchestrates a clash between the high world of music and the jagged cadences of city life.
