A Street Theater Named Desire
A Street Theater Named Desire is The Theater Offensive's guerilla AIDS activist theater troupe. It helps create a safe atmosphere in gay cruising grounds and presents environmental interventions that include outrageously sexy performances, installation art and community gathering space. The troupe's performers are male public health service providers, activists, and performance artists interested in site-specific performance interventions.
Partnered with public health agencies, A Street Theater Named Desire creates an environment that lubricates higher quality safe sex outreach and education encounters to men who have sex with men. Both our troupe and the audiences we serve are remarkably diverse in economic background, race, and ethnicity. Outreach workers report longer and more focused conversations with clients. Outreach workers also achieve much higher numbers of Basic Risk Assessments and Supported Referrals, thereby not only having a greater understanding of the risks that clients are taking in these cruising grounds but also steering men into services that are relevant to them.
