Out on the Edge Festival of Queer Theater
The Theater Offensive presented its first Out on the Edge Festival of Queer Theater in 1992. Held annually in the fall, the Festival is considered to be among the world's premier queer theater series. Among the cutting-edge theater artists that have appeared at the Festival are Quentin Crisp, Tim Miller, The Five Lesbian Brothers, Luis Alfaro, Holly Hughes, Pomo Afro Homos, Alec Mapa, Split Britches, Jackie Hoffman, BLOOLIPS, and Marga Gomez, among many others. The Theater Offensive is also known worldwide for featuring the best artists from under-represented queer communities, so the festival gives audiences a unique opportunity to see performances by artists of color, the differently-abled, and transgendered artists.
Plays At Work
Our Plays At Work series develops and premieres theatrical work by regional queer artists through staged reading and workshop formats.
Over the years, we have produced a number of full-scale productions, all of which have come up through our distinctive program of guiding innovative original work through script development, staged readings, and workshop productions. Recent shows that we developed that have received full producitons include Surviving the Nian by Melissa Li & Abe Rybeck, Oedipus at Palm Springs* by The Five Lesbian Brothers, Bel Canto by Daniel Alexander Jones, Last Rites* and Hamartia Blues* by Letta Neely, Motherlands and Immaculate Infection by Brenda Cotto Escalera and Noelia Ortiz Cortes, 5 Bottles in a Six Pack* by Renita Martin, and Oklahoma City by Tom Cole.
We feature free public education workshops with featured artists, community dialogue about the evolving shows, and interaction between artists and patrons. We also host an annual Play Lab.
New England based artists are invited to submit a script for our play development lab. Download submission guidelines (PDF).
