General Information on True Colors
Founded in 1994, True Colors: OUT Youth Theater, a community program of The Theater Offensive, is a theater troupe for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning youth and their allies (LGBTQA), ages 14 to 22, dedicated to presenting an honest portrayal of the lives of LGBTQA youth. Twice a year, during the fall and spring school terms, True Colors recruits a culturally diverse theater troupe of 10-12 GLBT youth and their allies. A team of artists and teachers guide troupe members in creating a new theater piece based on their lives and experiences. The troupe then tours this original play to schools and community groups throughout Massachusetts.

Troupe members also receive training on how to lead forums, discussions, and creative workshops for their peers. This is a great place for youth with lots, little or no theater experience to create art and make friends while working to build skills as theater artists, activists and community leaders. We have made it our mission to establish a creative outlet where youth develop the skills needed to make their voices heard and become agents of positive social change.

True Colors Auditions
True Colors: Out Youth Theater is seeking talented, motivated, committed individuals between the ages of 14 and 22 to join us in creating and performing an original performance piece that will tour throughout Massachusetts. True Colors auditions for new troupe members twice a year, in the Winter and early Fall. Troupe members come from a variety of backgrounds, includinig people with interests in acting, singing, dancing, music, writing, GLBTQ activism or technical theater. Touring will take place during daytime and early evening hours and will be scheduled on a month to month basis with no more than five performances per month. Troupe members receive a stipend for rehearsal & performance time.

To audition, performers are not required to present prepared audition pieces, but are encouraged to share with us a 2 - 3 minute performance piece (monologue, spoken word, dance, music piece, or song) so we can get to know your performance style and skills better. You may also bring in other original art creations! Casting will be final within two weeks of the auditions and callbacks. A mandatory week of intensive training will follow in the first few weeks of rehearsal. This week of training, which runs weekdays during early evening hours and possible weekend hours, will serve as an introduction to True Colors, the theater piece development process, and specific theater techniques, and will also produce the basic framework for the final performance piece, which will tour to locations throughout Massachusetts. At the end of the intensive training, the troupe will present a preview performance for friends and family. Contact us for more information on upcoming auditions.

True Colors Touring/Booking
BRING TRUE COLORS TO YOUR SCHOOL OR ORGANIZATION! Our troupe creates art that is dynamic and thought provoking. We offer a unique combination of performance, discussion, and workshops designed to suit your organizations needs.

True Colors presents original performance pieces generally running 30-40 minutes in length, with additional workshops and symposium materials available for school assemblies or community organization settings. While specific performance content changes from year to year with the development of new pieces by each troupe, the core concept of presenting issues that are important to queer youth and their allies remains the same. True Colors is a great tool for opening a dialogue within your school or community on issues such as sexual orientation, gender identity and gender roles, not to mention larger concepts such as community, tolerance, and acceptance of differences.

Performances and productions are done in a minimalist style, using minimal costumes, props, and set pieces and focusing more on storytelling. This style of theater presentation reinforces to audiences their own ability to create theater with limited resources.

There is a sliding scale fee starting at $500. Fees are negotiable and payment options are available. Contact us for more information on booking/touring.
