By Lady Dane Figeuroa Edidi

Directed by Goldie Patrick

When Janet Howard and her son move into her grandmother’s home on H Street, she doesn’t expect her life to change. But after meeting the infamous singer Josephine St. Croix, reconnecting with an old flame, and forming an unexpected bond with their white neighbor, long-buried secrets begin to surface—threatening to pull them apart.

Set against the backdrop of 1960s D.C., this world premiere by award-winning multi-hyphenate artist Lady Dane Figueroa Edidi, Smoke explores love, found family, motherhood, and healing—inviting us to consider what it means when the community we build becomes our saving grace.

TTO is proud to partner with Think Outside the VOX to provide accessibility services (culturally competent Audio Description and Open Captions) for all performances of SMOKE. VOX is committed to creating accessible art experiences with high-quality accessibility services created for and by the people they serve: Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, Low-Vision, neurodivergent and disabled communities.

Audio Description is a visually crafted, strategically timed live narration of the visual elements of a show designed for Blind and Low-Vision patrons. The AD pre-show includes descriptions of characters, set design, props, costumes, and visual references. The AD is broadcast via radio transmitter to patrons wearing a single headphone receiver, allowing users to listen to both onstage dialogue and the in-show AD in real time.

Open Captioning (OC) is the text display of dialogue, music and sound effects on large TVs which are visible to the entire audience. Captions differ from subtitles, which are the translation of all spoken language into one language (i.e. Spanish dubs). The script has been crafted to include stage directions, lyrics, and sound effects that push the plot. Line by line, the captions toggled by a live operator who sits in the house. Captioning Services (editing and operation) provided by VOX with technology by CC Theater.
